★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

Hues and Cues is our award-winning color perception party game that sparks creativity and conversation at every table. Designed for 3-10 players, this vibrant guessing game challenges you to communicate colors using imaginative clues — no color wheel knowledge required.

While we designed Hues and Cues for optimal fun with 3 or more players, many fans have asked: can you play Hues and Cues with 2 players? The answer is yes. With simple rule adaptations, two players can enjoy competitive color-guessing rounds, though we recommend gathering a larger group when possible for the full social experience.

How the Game Works with Any Group Size

Each round, one player becomes the Cue Giver and selects a color square on our 480-hue game board. Using only words — no pointing or gestures — they provide two one-word cues followed by one two-word cue to guide teammates toward their chosen color.

Players place their scoring cubes on the board where they think the target color lives. The closer your guess, the more points you earn from the 60 wooden cubes distributed throughout the game. Standard gameplay shines with 3-10 participants, creating a dynamic guessing environment where multiple perspectives enrich every round.

Game Board and Color Grid

Our centerpiece game board displays 480 carefully curated color squares, arranged from warm to cool hues with subtle saturation gradients. This thoughtful organization helps players develop color perception skills while ensuring every shade feels distinct yet connected to its neighbors.

Scoring Cubes and Cards

You’ll find 60 wooden scoring cubes — 10 each in six colors — sized perfectly for confident placement on the board without obscuring adjacent squares. The 100 double-sided color cards provide 200 unique color targets, ensuring fresh gameplay across dozens of sessions. Each card references specific board coordinates, though only the Cue Giver sees these during play.

Player Count and Session Duration

Hues and Cues accommodates 3-10 players in its standard ruleset, with rounds flowing smoothly once everyone understands the cueing system. A typical game lasts 30 minutes, though enthusiastic groups often play multiple rounds in a single sitting.

The 60 wooden cubes support scoring for up to 10 simultaneous players, with point distribution scaling based on guess accuracy. Smaller groups of 3-5 players experience faster pacing and more frequent turns as Cue Giver, while gatherings of 8-10 create lively discussion as everyone interprets the same clues differently.

Perfect for our weekly game nights
We’ve played Hues and Cues with groups ranging from 4 to 9 people, and it’s always a hit. The 60 wooden cubes are great quality, and I love how the game sparks such creative conversations about how we all see colors differently. Even non-gamers pick it up instantly.

Works surprisingly well with just two
I bought this wondering if we could play Hues and Cues with 2 players since it’s usually just me and my partner. We tried the variant rules and had a blast taking turns as Cue Giver. It’s more strategic than with a big group but still super fun.

Beautiful components and clever design
The game board’s color gradient is stunning, and those 60 wooden cubes feel so nice to handle. I’ve played this with my art school friends and my family — everyone finds it equally engaging. The 30-minute playtime is perfect when you want something substantial but not too long.

Great for multilingual groups
We played this at an international gathering where people spoke four different languages. Everyone could participate because color is universal. The rules are simple, and watching everyone interpret the same clues differently was hilarious and insightful.

Kids love it as much as adults
Bought this for family game night with our 8 and 11-year-olds. They’re actually better at the creative color clues than we are! The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is I wish there were even more than 60 cubes so we could play with our extended family gatherings of 12+.

Outstanding party game investment
I’ve hosted a dozen game nights since getting Hues and Cues, and it consistently gets requested. The quality justifies the price — those wooden cubes alone are worth it. Plays quickly enough to run multiple rounds, and everyone leaves wanting to play again next time.

Good to know

Questions About Hues and Cues Gameplay

Yes, Hues and Cues works with 2 players using our variant rules included in the box. Players alternate as Cue Giver and Guesser, tracking points across multiple rounds.

While the game is optimized for 3-10 players where multiple guessers create dynamic interactions, two-player sessions offer a more strategic, contemplative experience. Many couples enjoy this intimate format for date nights or quiet evenings at home.

The game board features 480 distinct color squares arranged in a gradient grid from warm to cool tones. You receive 60 wooden scoring cubes — 10 cubes each in six different colors.

These 60 cubes support full gameplay for up to 10 simultaneous players. The color distribution ensures everyone can place their guesses clearly on the board without running out of cubes during standard 30-minute sessions.

We recommend Hues and Cues for ages 8 and up. The age guideline reflects reading independence for understanding the rulebook rather than gameplay complexity.

Younger children often excel at creative color associations, sometimes outperforming adults with their imaginative clue interpretations. The game contains no small parts that pose choking hazards, and the 60 wooden cubes are sized safely for elementary-age players and older.

Most Hues and Cues games run approximately 30 minutes from setup to final scoring. Gameplay length depends on your group size and how much discussion happens between rounds.

First-time players may take 5-10 minutes longer while learning the cueing system. Once familiar with the rules, groups often play multiple back-to-back sessions since the 60 wooden cubes and 200 color card options ensure every round feels fresh.

No color theory knowledge or artistic background is required. Hues and Cues celebrates personal color associations rather than formal color wheel understanding.

The game thrives on each player’s unique perspective — your “sunset” might be another player’s “desert” or “autumn.” This subjectivity creates the fun, with the 480-color board offering enough variety that creative clues can successfully guide guesses without technical vocabulary.

Our standard Hues and Cues features a full-sized 10.5-inch game board, 60 standard wooden cubes, and accommodates 3-10 players comfortably. The Travel Edition uses a compact magnetic board with smaller cubes designed for portability.

Both versions include the same number of color cards and support 2-player variant rules. Choose the standard edition for home game nights and the Travel Edition for vacations, camping trips, or commuter gameplay.

Players with color vision differences can participate, though gameplay experience varies by type and degree. The 480-color board includes subtle saturation and brightness variations that some colorblind players navigate using lightness cues rather than pure hue.

We recommend trying the game with understanding that certain color distinctions may prove challenging. Many colorblind players report enjoying the social and creative aspects even when precise color identification differs from typical color vision. The 60 wooden cubes come in six distinct colors chosen for maximum differentiation.
