Hues and Cues Original Edition
Hues and Cues is our award-winning color perception party game where players give clues using only colors and work together to guess the right hue. We designed this game for 3-10 players who love creative communication and lively debate.
At the heart of Hues and Cues is our vibrant 480-color game board that serves as your communication canvas. One player becomes the Cue Giver each round, selecting a color on the board and offering two one-word clues to guide teammates. The closer your team guesses to the target color, the more points everyone scores.
We built Hues and Cues for families, friends, and party gatherings where conversation flows as freely as creativity. No drawing skills required—just your perception of color and the joy of discovering how differently we all see the world around us.

Game Components and Quality Materials
Every Hues and Cues game includes premium components designed to withstand hundreds of play sessions. Our oversized game board features a professionally printed color spectrum with 480 distinct shades, carefully calibrated to show subtle gradations from warm oranges to cool blues and everything between.
The 100 double-sided scoring cards are printed on heavyweight cardstock that shuffles smoothly and resists wear. We include 30 wooden player pieces—15 in red and 15 in blue—so even large groups can mark their guesses simultaneously on the board.

How to Play Hues and Cues
Setting Up Your First Game
Place the 480-color game board in the center of your table where all players can reach it comfortably. Shuffle the scoring cards and deal one to each player—these track points throughout the game. One player volunteers to be the first Cue Giver and secretly selects any color on the board as their target.
Giving Clues and Making Guesses
The Cue Giver offers two one-word clues to help teammates identify their chosen color. Clues can reference objects, emotions, or concepts—”ocean” and “sapphire” might point to a deep blue, while “sunset” and “tangerine” suggest a warm orange hue. After hearing both clues, players place their colored pieces on the board where they believe the target color lives.
Perfect For Game Night and Family Gatherings
We created Hues and Cues for social gatherings where conversation matters as much as competition. The game naturally sparks discussion about color associations—why does “mint” mean seafoam green to one player but pale lime to another? These debates become the most memorable moments of gameplay.
Hues and Cues scales beautifully from intimate groups of three to party crowds of ten players. Smaller groups enjoy focused collaboration, while larger gatherings create energetic chaos as multiple perspectives collide. We recommend team play for groups of six or more, pairing players together to discuss clues before placing pieces.

Questions About Playing Hues and Cues
Hues and Cues accommodates 3-10 players comfortably. For groups of 3-5 players, we recommend individual play where everyone competes to guess the target color. Groups of 6-10 players work best in team format, pairing players together to discuss clues before placing their pieces.
The game includes 30 player pieces total—15 red and 15 blue—which allows even maximum-size groups to mark guesses simultaneously on the board. Gameplay remains engaging across all group sizes, though larger crowds create more lively debate about color interpretations.
We recommend Hues and Cues for ages 8 and up. The rules are simple enough for elementary-age children to grasp quickly, while the creative clue-giving challenges adult players equally.
Younger children who understand basic colors can participate with adult guidance, though they may need help selecting strategic clues. The game has no reading requirement during active play, making it accessible for kids still developing literacy skills. Many families report that children and grandparents enjoy playing together as equals.
Most Hues and Cues games last 20-30 minutes from first clue to final score. The pace depends on how quickly your Cue Giver rotates and how much discussion happens between guesses.
Groups that love debating color associations may extend gameplay to 40 minutes, while competitive players focused on scoring move faster. The flexible game length makes Hues and Cues perfect as a party warmup, between longer strategy games, or as a standalone evening activity. You can always play multiple rounds back-to-back if your group wants to continue.
Players with color vision deficiencies can absolutely enjoy Hues and Cues, though the experience differs from standard color perception. The 480-square board includes many similar hues that appear identical to some colorblind players, which can make precise guessing more challenging.
We’ve heard from colorblind players who enjoy the game by focusing on brightness values and relying on teammates’ color descriptions. Some groups adapt rules to allow the Cue Giver to indicate a general board region before offering word clues. The social communication aspect remains fun regardless of color perception differences.
When multiple players place pieces on the identical square, everyone who guessed that spot earns full points according to their distance from the target color. There’s no penalty for matching another player’s guess.
This rule encourages collaborative thinking rather than competition within your team. Players often discuss possibilities before placing pieces, especially in team mode. The scoring system rewards proximity to the target, so a cluster of guesses in the right region benefits everyone involved.
The 100 double-sided scoring cards in Hues and Cues are fully reusable across unlimited game sessions. Players use them to track accumulated points throughout each game by moving a token or marking their current score.
The cards are printed on durable cardstock designed to withstand regular shuffling and handling. After each game concludes, simply reset the cards for your next play session. With proper care, the scoring cards will last through hundreds of games before showing any wear.
Hues and Cues arrives complete with everything needed for immediate gameplay—the 480-color board, scoring cards, player pieces, and instruction booklet. No batteries, apps, or additional purchases required.
The only item we recommend having nearby is a flat playing surface large enough to accommodate the 19.5 × 13.5 inch game board with space around it for players to reach comfortably. A dining table or coffee table works perfectly for most group sizes.
